Have your say

Make a formal complaint

The vast majority of people in the Police Service act with honesty and integrity but, as with any other large organisation, it is always possible that a few individuals may not adhere to these standards.

Even isolated incidents damage public confidence and tarnish the reputation of the Police Service as a whole. Dealing proactively with this issue is a priority for all police forces and the City of London Police is no exception.

The force has an impartial Professional Standards Directorate, which promotes integrity and investigates any allegations or malpractice.

If you are not happy with the way an officer has dealt with you, please complete our Public Complaint form (Word document) and send it to the Professional Standards Directorate, who investigate complaints. Contact details are as follows:

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC)

Alternatively, you may wish to make your complaint direct to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

This is an independent body to oversee and investigate police complaints that was set up in April 2004 as a result of the new legislation in the Police Reform Act 2002. The Police Reform Act sets out the statutory powers and responsibilities of the IPCC, Chief Police Officers and Police Authorities for the new complaints system. This guarantees the independence of the Commission, outlines its role as guardian of the police complaints system as a whole, and gives the IPCC a duty to raise public confidence. The IPCC can choose to manage or supervise the police investigation into a case and independently investigate the most serious cases.

The IPCC produce a number of booklets offering guidance about their role and the new complaints and appeal procedure:

  1. An introduction to the IPCC (PDF), 239 KB
  2. How to make a complaint against the police (PDF), 535 KB
  3. Appealing against the non-recording of a complaint (PDF), 101 KB
  4. Appealing against the Local Resolution process  (PDF), 98 KB
  5. Appealing against the outcome of a police investigation into your complaint (PDF), 99 KB
