Business briefings

The City of London Police have been conducting 'business briefings' since 1999 to inform the community about potential security threats or public disorder. Following the events of September 11th 2001, the briefings were given to members of the Westminster, Canary Wharf and City business communities. These briefings remain an important and well attended part of Policing the City.

Mr Ian Moller from the Bank of New York said:
"First and foremost they (business briefings) give great comfort to Senior Management who are impressed that the City Police are prepared within reason to share information with the business community. They stop the speculation and hype of both the media and companies who try to exploit situations for their own benefit, in other words they are factual and reassuring."

For more information about anti-terrorist measures, or if you represent a City of London organisation which would like a presentation on the subject, please contact CounterTerrorismSection@cityoflondon.police.uk.

Public warning system

The City of London Police’s public warning system is a network of loud-speakers that can be used to alert the public to a major emergency. The System was officially launched on 16 May 2007 and is installed at selected locations across the City.

It is available both to complement and enhance the existing e-mail and pager alert methods of warning and informing the City’s population that the City of London Police already fully utilise.

Messages can be broadcast simultaneously from all speakers or via individually selected ones. The system is tested on a regular basis.

For more information on the system, or on any aspect of emergency planning and business continuity, contact emergencyplanningofficers@cityoflondon.pnn.police.uk

Always call 999 in an emergency.

Priority Alert scheme

The priority alert scheme provides key business personnel - not only in the City, but across London - with ‘active’ information on incidents that could affect the City community. Incidents such as suspect vehicles, road closures, explosions etc.

The scheme is based around the very latest in telephone SMS texting and pager technology, and allows the police to broadcast text messages to each one of the subscribers in an instant. The priority system has the ability to contact all the subscribers simultaneously.

E-mail Messaging Scheme

The City of London Police E-mail Messaging Scheme has been established to facilitate an information exchange with members of the City business and residential community. The aim of the scheme is to provide information to, or seek assistance from, the City community on policing matters.

The City of London Police recognise that residential and business requirements from the system are slightly different and therefore this scheme allows people to sign up to the system which best suits their needs. The database complements the Priority Alert scheme and is not a replacement for it.

The e-mail messaging scheme is a free service. For a small charge it is also possible to have a notification sent to your pager or mobile phone notifying you that an e-mail message has been sent to your inbox.

You can subscribe online to this service. For further information, and to subscribe to the scheme, details are as follows:

Cabwatch Scheme

The Cabwatch scheme is a means by which City of London Police can send text message alerts containing real-time security alerts, major road closures, serious crime information and appeals for information to London taxi drivers.

Originally piloted by City of London Police and Computer Cab plc in the Square Mile, the scheme has now been extended to include taxi drivers in the Westminster area in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police.

Cabwatch is a free service for all licensed taxi drivers. To subscribe to the service, text your 4 or 5 digit cab number followed by the word 'cabwatch' to 61626. Further information about Cabwatch can be found on the CommunitySafe web site - www.communitysafe.gov.uk.
