The Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Unit is a stand-alone section within Corporate Services reporting directly to the Assistant Commissioner (responsible for Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) support). The Unit is comprised of specialist police officers and staff with knowledge and expertise in a range of diversity-focused disciplines.
The focus of their work relates to all diversity issues both internally and externally. The Unit has ongoing projects which look at the legislative requirements in relation to diversity as well as issues relating to improving service delivery to all our communities.
Members of the Unit attend a number of community events to promote the work being undertaken and are supported by colleagues across the organisation. This helps to ensure diversity is mainstreamed throughout all the activities of the City of London Police.
December 2009 saw the launch of a strategy, drawn up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), the Association of Police Authorities (APA) and Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Constabulary (HMIC), known as the Tripartite Strategy. The National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) has developed a framework to aid the delivery of equality through a proactive approach to diversity called the Equality Standard for the Police Service (ESPS). The City of London Police anticipates publishing an appropriate Action Plan once the national ACPO Action Plan has been finalised. City of London Police meanwhile have produced a draft Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Strategy which broadly mirrors the aims of the Tripartite Strategy but with a local focus. As one of the pilot forces for the trialling of the ESPS, the City Police is well placed to deliver a high level of performance against national standards in equality, diversity and human rights.
