Summer drink drive crackdown
The City of London Police will again be clamping down on drink
drivers this summer, as part of a national initiative.
Last year the force breathalysed 775 people in June alone, with
more than 120,000 drivers being tested across England and
Wales.
Officers will be out testing motorists day and night, targeting
drivers heading home from an evening out and those driving in the
next morning, who may still be over the limit.
The force won’t just be testing for the influence of alcohol.
Officers are trained to carry out Fitness Impairment Testing if
they believe a driver is under the influence of drugs.
Insp David Aspinall, head of the force’s Roads Policing Unit,
said:
“The City's bars and pubs are always busier in the summer,
and with a World Cup on the horizon that will certainly be the case
this year. We want everyone to enjoy the good weather – and
hopefully the good results – safely, and that means cracking down
on anyone who drives under the influence of drink or
drugs.
“The message is simple: if you’re drinking today, then leave
your car at home – otherwise you’ll be leaving it at home tomorrow,
and the next day, and the next day. Over the next month we will
catch drink drivers in the City, and they will lose their license.
Make sure you’re not one of them.”
