12 August

The City of London Police continues to support the Metropolitan Police-led operation to keep London safe, as well as keeping significant resources dedicated to protecting the Square Mile and its community.

Additional security measures will remain in place across the weekend, both here in the City and across London, with police officers from across the country supporting London police.

More than 1050 people have now been arrested in connection with the violence, disorder and looting in recent days, and almost 600 have been charged.

In the City, Assistant Commissioner Frank Armstrong has thanked City businesses for their support by releasing Special Constables for duty, with a significant number of Specials reporting for duty each evening. You can read his message on our website.

The City remains safe, but there is no room for complacency, and we thank you for maintaining vigilance. If you see any criminal activity taking place, dial 999 in the event of an emergency, or 101 in a non-emergency.

The City of London Police continues to support the Metropolitan Police-led operation to keep London safe, as well as keeping significant resources dedicated to protecting the Square Mile and its community.

A total of 922 people have been arrested in connection with violence, disorder and looting of which 401 people have been charged. The latest information can be seen on the Metropolitan Police website.

There remains a large number of police officers on London’s streets tonight, while police officers from across the country will also be in the City during the course of the week and across the weekend.

The response from volunteers and special constables who have given up their time to assist City of London Police has been unprecedented, and the force is very grateful both to those individuals and to their employers, who have been extremely understanding and supportive during this period.

The City remains safe, and the past two nights have seen a significant reduction in disorder across London. However, there is no room for complacency, and we thank you for maintaining vigilance.

The City of London Police continues to work to keep the City safe.

Additional security measures remain in place and significant police resources are available to protect the city and its community.  The force outlined precautionary measures to businesses yesterday, which remain current.

The public should not intervene in any criminal activity they see taking place. In the event of an emergency, dial 999, or in a non-emergency call 101.

The force continues to monitor social networking sites, and is in close liaison with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and British Transport Police (BTP)

While criminal activity has taken place across a number of London areas, there is no suggestion that specific business premises are being targeted.

There are currently no significant delays to the transport system as a result of the violent disorder that has taken place.  For the latest information see: tfl.gov.uk or btp.police.uk..

The City of London Police continues to provide officers to support the MPS, which is leading the response to the disorder in London. The MPS has reported that between Saturday night and Tuesday morning 525 arrests were made - 310 of which were overnight on Monday.

Officers continue to arrest those involved in disorder both on the street and as through Operation Withern. There have been a total of 770 arrests so far.

The City of London Police continues to support the Metropolitan Police Service as they tackle the disorder that has been taking place across London.

Additional security measures have been put in place within the City and the force is providing advice and reassurance to the community.

You may notice an increase in police officers on patrol in the City, and this should not be cause for alarm.

Police are encouraging businesses to consider the following precautionary measures:

  • where possible retail premises should be made as secure as reasonably possible and if fitted your alarm systems are fully operational
  • ensure staff report any suspicious activity to security and / or police
  • consider regular checks of the building and surrounding area
  • identify areas that are vulnerable to forced entry
  • make sure all service doors are kept locked and secure when not in use
  • ensure your CCTV system is fully operational
  • in case of an emergency ensure there is an up to date record of key holders who can be contacted
