Police arrest man in Liberia
bribe investigation
Officers from the City of London Police's Overseas
Anti-Corruption Unit (OACU) have arrested a 53-year-old man, after
searching residential premises in North West England as part of an
investigation into an allegation of overseas bribery (3 June).
The police action followed an inquiry triggered by a report to
City of London Police from the campaigning organisation Global
Witness, alleging payments of bribes by UK nationals to officials
within the African state of Liberia. The inquiry centres on deals
involving the trading of carbon credit concessions.
Detective Superintendent Colin Cowan, head of the OACU said
"The City of London Police applauds Global Witness's action in
reporting their concerns to us and thereby helping to ensure that
British business interests overseas are conducted in the
appropriate manner".
