City of London Police's 'cyclecop' twitter page, written by Sgt Antony Wolfson, saw an influx of new followers in the build-up to Christmas, with more than 750 people now following the Cycle Squad officer. The twitter feed has grown in popularity in the last month, including more than 50 people joining in just an hour at one point.
Sgt Wolfson has been promoting a mixture of festive season road safety advice, local police initiatives, cycling news stories and images. Citycyclecop Sgt Wolfson said: "This is an excellent way to liaise with the local cycling community. I get to hear honest, first-hand feedback from my followers, which I am able to respond to in real time.
“A recent example was contact through twitter by a large cycle courier firm that wanted to interview me for their website, to help strengthen relations between the police and this important segment of the cycle community. We have a large number of avid followers who ask advice, and I plan to invite them all to a seminar and Q&A session in the New Year. "I even have followers playing 'find the cyclecop' who have been sending me photos when they think they have spotted me out and about while on patrol!"
