Appeal for witnesses to New Year's Eve attack

Detectives are appealing for information after two US tourists were attacked in the City on New Year's Eve.

The couple had watched the New Year's Eve fireworks over the River Thames. At around 12:30am they walked north from Blackfriars up New Bridge Street, where they were followed by a group of around 12 youths aged between 17 and 20, roughly six boys and six girls.

The pair suffered a violent attack, as they were punched and kicked to the floor by the youths, who then went through their pockets and bags, stealing $30 and £60.

The suspects made their escape heading north towards Ludgate Circus.

PC Giles Cunningham said: "What should have been a night of celebration for two visitors to our city has instead ended with violence. The victims were not only robbed, but left shaken and with cuts and bruises to their face and body.

"We know there were lots of people in the area heading home from New Year's Eve celebrations, and we'd urge anyone who saw the attack or the gang to contact us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information should contact PC Giles Cunningham on  020 7601 2655. Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.
