Internet Referral Unit announced to counter terrorism online

Click to report terrorist content online via direct.gov.uk

Whilst the internet makes a positive contribution to most people’s lives on a daily basis, it can be and is used by criminals and terrorists.

The Government and police are committed to protecting the public from terrorist content online and the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) has been set up to enable members of the public to report material that is used for terrorist purposes or to promote extremist messages that radicalise vulnerable people.

Content may include bomb-making instructions, messages intended to stir up hatred against any religious or ethnic group or speeches or essays calling for racial or religious violence.

New material produced by the Government encourages members of the public to report content on the web which they think may be illegal, or which they find offensive.

Download the flyer for further information.

There is an anonymous referral system for members of the public at www.direct.gov.uk/reportingonlineterrorism.
