What is the City of London Police Support Volunteer programme?

The City of London Police Support Volunteer programme enables volunteers to support the Force.  Established in October 2010, City of London Police has around seven volunteers, but we are in the process of developing and identifying volunteer roles within the Force to welcome on board more volunteers.

What are Police Support Volunteers?

Police Support Volunteers are here to help police officers and police staff in the Force by gifting their time and provide support to different departments.

Police Support volunteers play a different role to that of Special Constables. Specials wear police uniforms and have full police powers. Police Support Volunteers do not have police powers and provide an additional resource to undertake roles suitable to be undertaken by a volunteer that are not provided by support staff or police officers.

Who can become a Police Support Volunteer?

Volunteers bring a wide range of experience and skills to the teams that they support and help to build bridges between communities and the police.  We aim to integrate volunteers from a variety of backgrounds with various skills and abilities in order to enhance, complement and support the work of all officers and police staff.

Police Support Volunteers:

• Must be aged 16 years or over. There is no upper age limit.  (Parental consent is needed if you are under 18),
• May see or receive confidential and sensitive information. Therefore, success is subject to vetting checks and two professional references.
• Are not required to wear uniform and will be asked to wear your own smart clothes.  You will be provided with an ID badge. 
• Must have been a permanent resident in the UK for at least 3 continuous years, prior to application.
• Preferabably currently live, work or study within the City of London?
• Please note we will review applications from people where there maybe a significant possibility that their role as a volunteer could lead to a conflict of interest in their professional life.

We really appreciate how valuable your time is, so we’re very flexible about when you gift your time to suit you and your commitments – as much or as little as you can spare.

What are the benefits of becoming a Police Support Volunteer

Becoming a Police Support Volunteers will give you the opportunity to use your skills, experience and knowledge to give something back and make a difference in your community. 

You will also gain the following:

• Training - An introduction programme and on the job training will be provided. 
• Support - You will be provided with guidance, advice and support to assist you carry out your activities.
• As a volunteer you will not be paid, but you will receive reimbursement for reasonable out of pocket travelling expenses.
• Learn new skills and gain experience, Personal development and growth.
• Meet new people and make new friends.
• Engage and interact with people from different communities and backgrounds.
• An increased sense of belonging to a group or community.

What could you do as a volunteer?

Volunteers work alongside police officers, special constables, police community support officers and police staff, providing mainly administrative support to enable the team to focus on community priorities and visible policing. You could be carrying out tasks as varied as organising community partnership meetings, updating the Intranet or carrying out research.

We will contact you with any relevant Volunteer Descriptions.  If you decide that you are interested in the role you will need to fill in an application form

We will then invite you along to an informal interview where you will be given the opportunity to ensure that the role of volunteer will suit you and that your expectations are matched. You will be required to bring your completed application form and two forms of identification from the following list:

• One of the following:
  • British (or EEA) Passport;
  • Full UK Driving License;
  • Original Birth Certificate. 

AND

• One of the following:
  • Proof of current Residence such as:
    • Council Tax,
    • Gas,
    • Electricity,
    • Water or
    • Landline Telephone bills. (The bill must not be any older than 3 months.)

If we have no roles that are appropriate or of interest we can register your name on the Police Support Volunteers database. This database will be maintained and kept within HR in a safe, secure and confidential environment and can only be accessed by the Volunteer Coordinator.
