Wards Policing FAQ

Why do we wash down areas where rough sleepers congregate?

This is done to ensure that the area concerned is cleaned. There are links between rough sleeping and minor crimes and anti-social behaviour, which does have a significant impact on the community, particularly when trying to access open space areas and alleyways. Urination, violence, criminal damage, theft and drunkenness are all issues, which are regularly raised by the community and associated to rough sleeping. A dedicated Wards Police Team work in partnership with Broadway and the City of London Corporation to regularly visit rough sleepers, check on welfare, and offer access to specialist services. We call this Operation Poncho.

What is the City doing about rough sleepers?

As part of an ongoing joint plan the City of London Police in cooperation with the City of London Corporation, the charity Broadway and other partner agencies we are endeavouring to get our rough sleeper community into accommodation and so off the streets. This is not as easy as it appears as a number of our rough sleepers are entrenched in their lifestyle. Once in accommodation they will then have access to a number of other services provided by the Government.

The City of London commissions an outreach service, provided by Broadway, who work with rough sleepers in the square mile. This service is overseen by Davina Lilley, Street Population Manager.
