  • Presentations: The City of London Police Wards department are able to arrange presentations on a whole host of safety issues should you wish to take advantage of these please do not hesitate to contact the Wards Department on 020 7601 2452 or alternatively speak to your Wards officer or PCSO.
  • Special constables: You may  want to consider becoming a Special Constable. Special Constables are trained officers who offer their services to the City of London on a voluntary basis. Find out more about how you can become a Special Constable.
  • Cycling: report any incidents of careless/dangerous or inconsiderate cycling, as this alllows us to identify 'hotspots' and deploy our staff to challenge this behaviour.
  • Rough sleepers and street drinkers: inform us in real time, as this allows us to intervene in a timely fashion and potentially defuse or prevent any escalation.
  • Drunks: if a person is so drunk they are unable to walk in a straight line or stand unassisted they will be refused travel on the railways, there have been several deaths on the railways because drunks have fallen under trains. Visit the British Transport Police website (opens in a new browser window) for more information.

We have been very busy over the last few months tackling your concerns, in and around the Bishopsgate Area. We’ve taken on board your comments are actively working to remedy nuisance behaviour in the area.

We were really happy to hear that you think we are doing a good job with a visible reduction in beggars. You told us that you have seen a reduction in beggars in the area as well as a reduction in the number of prostitute cards displayed in phone boxes. This isn’t by coincidence! We have been targeting beggars, rough sleepers and the prostitute carders in the Bishopsgate Area and are dealing with them robustly.

We are also helping our homeless community, giving them access to specialist services and encouraging them off of the streets. We routinely count the number of homeless people at hotspots across this City. The most recent count took place on the 26/01/10 and we are happy to report that there has been a reduction from 46 to just 27. We will continue to work with our community providing support and services.

You mentioned that you thought Bishopsgate was a bit scruffy as well, so we have also liaised with the local authority with a view to tidy up the area. The City of London Corporation will soon commence a street clean. They are going to power wash the pavements in Bishopsgate and have already painted some of the railings in the area.

Your feedback and comments affect how we act, so please continue to feed us your thoughts, thanks again.

  1. Address begging anti social behaviour that is linked to begging.
  2. Address prostitute carders, who are littering and causing a nuisance to City workers and residents.
  3. Address rough sleepers who cause anti social behaviour, by drinking and urinating.

RESULTING IN:

BISHOPSGATE SIDE:

(Priority 1) Address begging anti social behaviour that is linked to begging.

Uniform Police Officers and PCSO’s are working on operation Baskin, (previously known as Operation Loose Change) where we work in partnership with the Metropolitan Police. The aim of operation Baskin is to reduce the number of people begging in the city by assisting rough sleepers off the streets and into housing. The Safer City Wards Team informed colleagues in other areas of the City Of London Police of this priority to enable them to respond to calls from you appropriately.

(Priority 2) Address prostitute carders, who are littering and causing a nuisance to City workers and residents.

Uniform Police Officers and PCSO’s are working on operation Monaco. We have been targeting prostitute carders in the Bishopsgate area with a view to prosecute offenders.

BARBICAN SIDE:

(Priority 1) Address cyclists disregarding red traffic lights at the junction of Beech Street and Aldersgate Street EC 2Y8 specifically between 7:30am and 9:30am.

PC's & PCSO's spend numerous hours at this junction doing High Visibility Patrols, but Cyclists tend not to commit offences at these times.

Signs designed by children highlighting the danger of disregarding traffic lights have been placed by the corporation at the junction on each set of lights as suggested by one of our residents.

(Priority 2) Address anti social behaviour in and around the Golden Lane Estate and the Barbican EC1Y during the evenings and early mornings when clubs within the Smithfield area close.
