Overview & brief history
Bread Street Ward is an irregular shaped ward, which nestles in
the very heart of the City of London. Its boundaries consist of
Bread Street in the East, Newgate street in the North, Warwick Lane
/ Ave Maria Lane in the West, and Queen Victoria Street to the
South.
This ward is primarily a business and retail area, and is
dominated by Paternoster Square, which has quickly become a
thriving cosmopolitan area that contains the London Stock Exchange,
Goldman Sachs, as well as a host of other large business
organisations. All of these premises sit hand in glove with
restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and wine bars alike, as well as
retail premises such as Boots the Chemist etc. The square is a very
popular location for both visitors and the staff of surrounding
buildings, who, during the summer months, enjoy the alfresco street
entertainment, supplied by the current security agents, Broadgate
Estates. This year we have seen, among other things, Elvis Presley
impersonators, and street pavement artists.
There are some major developmental projects that loom close. The
current main site is that of One New Change, EC4. This is currently
occupied by Allen & Overy, but the building is soon to be
brought down and a large business and retail premises erected in
its place. Further information about this project will be supplied
in future Bread Street Ward profile updates.
All of the wards within the City of London are very ancient
places indeed, all of which have a story to tell. Bread Street Ward
is particularly proud of one notable person who was born and raised
in Bread Street. Admiral Arthur Phillips was the founder and first
Governor of Australia. He was baptized in All Hallows Church, Bread
Street in 1738; he entered the Royal Navy in 1755, and died on the
31st August 1814. His commitment is still remembered to this day
when Australia Day is celebrated. A bust of Admiral Arthur Phillips
can be found in the gardens at Watling Street, to the West of the
Fidelity Investment building, 25 Cannon Street, London EC4M
5TA.
