Overview & brief history

Cheapside is part of the main arterial west / east route running through the City and consists of retail units predominantly mobile phone outlets and coffee shops.

Major re-development is now underway in Cheapside and shall be continuing for at least the next three years. This in turn will produce smart new office space and a new shopping parade.

The rest of the beat is dominated by business premises and livery companies, which include Goldsmiths Hall, Mercers Hall, Sadlers Hall and Wax Chandlers Hall. The main business premises are Investec and Schroders, along with Dresdner Kleinwort, who moved in to Gresham Street premises in 2006.

Constant site visits are an important part of the ward constable's role to maintain good relations between the businesses and the contractors. They also attend meetings of the City of London Corporation on such matters as health and safety, the impact on the surrounding area, and traffic problems.

Goldsmiths Hall has many exhibitions throughout the year and due to the nature of the valuable items on display, a police presence is often required. There are various licensed premises on the ward. These are generally aimed at the business community and do not tend to operate late licenses such as those in the nearby Bow Lane / Watling Street area.
