Overview & brief history
Much of the ward in previous years was policed by officers from
Bishopsgate Police Station.
The Ward takes its name from Shoemakers and Leather workers who
lived and worked around the area of Bow Lane from the 13th
Century.
Unlike other wards, Cordwainer is home to a large and
concentrated number of licensed premises, ranging from traditional
pubs, to nightclubs which are open until the early hours. The ward
is also home to a variety of large corporate businesses and a
significant number of retail outlets.
Cordwainer is situated in the east of the South area, and
borders with Bread Street, Cheapside, Walbrook, Cannon Street and
Queen Victoria Street.
Cheapside is the primary east-west arterial route linking
Newgate Street and Poultry. The names of the streets leading from
Cheapside are mostly named after what was sold in them in long gone
years, such as Wood, Milk, Bread, Honey, Poultry, etc.
Today there are 12 new developments planned along Cheapside over
the next 5 years, with more than 50,000 sqm of associated retail
outlets intended. The first of these to be completed is the
development of Bow Bells House which is due for completion at the
end of 2007. This will consist of 7 upper floors and a ground floor
and basement level containing retail units. The design incorporates
a public pedestrian route from Bow Church Yard to Bread Street.
Bow Lane is a focal point of the ward, with several fine
restaurants, pubs, wine bars and retail establishments. It can be
described as the epitome of London’s ‘Pastyme with Good
Companye’.Annual events within the ward include the Lord
Mayor’s Show, followed shortly by the traditional turning on of the
Christmas lights in Bow Lane, and the annual Ward Christmas Church
service held at St. Mary Le Bow in Cheapside.
