Overview & brief history

Cripplegate ward is a large and diverse area situated in the north west of the North area. It is bounded by Fore Street, Moor Lane, Golden Lane, part of Baltic Street and Goswell Road. It contains the residential population centre on the Golden Lane and Barbican Estates.

The estates are described as:

Golden Lane Estate

The Golden Lane Estate has 550 residencies and is made up of a diverse mix of young professionals, owner occupiers and ‘buy to let properties’. There is still a sizable number of older people, many of whom are retired. However, over the last 12-18 months an increasing number of social services clients have been housed there.

The main annual event on the estate is the Golden Lane Leisure Centre Fun Day, held in August. The community ward officer is in attendance on this family day. The ward officer liaises on a regular basis with estate management and also meets on a monthly basis with social services staff to discuss vulnerable people living on the estate.

The ward constables can be seen at their office in the Barbican at the base of Shakespear Tower.

Barbican Estate

The Barbican Estate has residential, educational, leisure and business centres. The residential population comprises 2003 residencies, and a population of approximately 5000 in 20 blocks, or houses as they are known. The main residential group is known as the Barbican Association, which disseminates information down through the house groups.

The estate now has a new police office which is located at the base of Shakespeare Tower, and is staffed Monday to Friday

The Barbican Arts and Leisure Centre houses theatres, cinemas, concert halls, art galleries, library and exhibition halls. A variety of concerts and exhibitions are held throughout the year. Within the Estate is the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the City of London School for Girls. A good relationship has been formed with these educational centres and constant liaison is maintained. Nursery’s located within the estate are regularly visited by the ward officers and PCSO’s.

Businesses surrounding the estate include:

Alban Gate, 125 London Wall. Has recently been fully occupied by J.P. Morgan.
Bastion House, 40 London Wall. Occupied by Trillium Land securities
Nomura House, Nomura bank,1 Aldersgate street
1 London Wall, A multi occupancy office complex
Several pubs, wine bars and restaurants
Holmes Place Gymnasium and Health Club

There are 3 city livery companies on the ward and these are Ironmongers Hall, Plaisterers Hall and Barber / Surgeons Hall.
