Overview & brief history

Portsoken Ward is situated at the eastern border of the force area and stretches from the Middlesex Street housing estate in the north to the Mansell Street housing estate at the south, encompassing most of the residential population in the East Area. This Ward also includes several large multi-occupied business premises, Aldgate Underground Station, a wide range of retail outlets, licensed restaurants and bars, St Botolph without church at Aldgate, the Sir John Cass primary school and a Travelodge hotel.

Persons of a diverse ethnic background populate the ward. Middlesex Street estate incorporating Petticoat Square and Petticoat Tower, historically was an estate where many Jewish families resided and while this is still evident today, this situation appears to be changing. The area is increasingly becoming the home for young families of an ever more diverse background.

The Mansell Street housing estate, incorporating Guinness and Iveagh Court, is home to mainly Asian residents who comprise around 75% of this population. These residential estates create the majority of work for the Ward Constable whose role it is to liaise with partners to resolve any issues or problems that occur.

As well as being invited to attend various ward community meetings, panels and social events the Ward Constable holds regular surgeries on the estates that provide an open forum for residents to drop in and discuss concerns or seek advice. Regular personal contact is also made with the business community to ensure any issues they may have are addressed.
