Stop & Search
Stop and search powers
On July 8, 2010, the Home Secretary announced changes to stop
and search powers under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
Officers can no longer search individuals using Section 44
powers, though the power to stop and search vehicles still applies,
if officers have reasonable suspicion the vehicle is being used in
connection with terrorism.
Officers can still stop and search a person who they reasonably
suspect to be involved in terrorism, using other Terrorism Act
powers such as Section 43.
The changes reflect interim guidelines given to police while a
review of counter-terrorism laws is completed.
