If you’ve received a speed camera activation letter or notice
You need to complete the appropriate sections of the notice and send it to the address on the front of the form within 28 days.
You'll normally then be sent a conditional offer of a fixed penalty £100 fine and have three penalty points added to your licence. However, you may be eligible for a driver retraining scheme course instead.
If you don't respond to the notice your case will be referred to court because you failed to provide the information you were asked for to the Police.
Don't send any payment or your driving licence to the Police.
High speed offences
If you've been recorded at what's considered a high speed it will be referred to court in the first instance. You'll still need to return the completed form and once it's processed you'll receive a court summons.
If you already have nine points on your licence
You need to complete and sign part one/section A of the notice and return it to the address shown on the form within 28 days.
You may be eligible for a driver retraining scheme course, but if you aren’t then the matter will be referred to court.
Driver awareness courses
Once you’ve responded to the notice, and done so within the required timeframe, you could be sent:
an option to attend a driver awareness course
a fixed penalty notice
or a letter telling you to go to court
The police will consider the following grounds when assessing your eligibility for the driver awareness course:
your speed narrowly exceeded the limit and falls within the guidelines set out by the National Police Chief Council (NPCC) up to:
31 mph in a 20 mph area
42 mph in a 30 mph area
53 mph in a 40 mph area
64 mph in a 50 mph area
75 mph in a 60 mph area
86 mph in a 70 mph area
you haven’t already completed a course within three years or are booked on an upcoming course
Please note: There's no legal entitlement to a course, these are offered at the sole discretion of police, and the courts have no powers over courses. If an offer for a course is made to you, the police can withdraw the offer at any time before the course has been successfully completed.
You'll be required to send us your correct driving licence details and date of birth. If you're a foreign national and have been issued with a licence by the DVLA then you should provide the details of the licence issued by the DVLA. If you don't hold a UK licence then you must send us the licence number and country of issue of your non-UK licence.
