Police Cadets

The City of London Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) is a uniformed voluntary organisation for young people living in the City and surrounding boroughs.

The scheme promotes a practical understanding of policing amongst all young people and encourages the spirit of adventure and good citizenship through volunteering in the community. If you’re aged 12-17 and interested in policing, then this could be for you!

When?

We meet each week on a Tuesday from 5.30-7.30pm There will also be an opportunity to get involved with additional duties at the weekend and in the evenings, but we’ll give you plenty of notice when these are coming up.

Where?

Weekly meetings take place at the Honourable Artillery Company, EC1Y 2BQ with some activities taking part in and around the City of London force area.

What will you do?

We provide a meaningful form of engagement and aim to strengthen the relationship with the police and all young people whilst also developing key life skills and to help prepare you for your future career whether within the policing family or another profession.

You will be working with a core team of police officers, police staff and volunteers, having the opportunity to become involved in fundraising events, local community problem solving operations as well as high profile civic events.

You’ll learn about a variety of policing activities and will gain an overview of the law, finding out how police officers deal with road traffic collisions, personal safety and conflict management as well as learning about the police caution and Stop & Search powers as well as many other areas of general police duties.

You will learn uniform care and drill as well how to keep fit and be active.

In addition to the weekly meetings you’ll have an opportunity to volunteer in the local community. Activities will include supporting local community officers at public events, delivering crime prevention advice, assisting the public at community events and mystery shopper activities for age restricted items.

What is expected of me?

The main requirement is that you have the enthusiasm and commitment to attend weekly meetings, be punctual and make an active and valuable contribution. The cadets form an important part of the City of London Police, so you should only join if you are serious about the opportunity.

Having been in trouble with the police will not necessarily prevent you joining us as we will always try to support everyone, so just give us an email, a call or just complete the application form.

More importantly it's a chance to show what you're made of and earn the respect of those around you. No one's going to judge you. If you're on our team, we're only interested in where you're at now and where you're heading.

How much does it cost?

We do not ask for subscriptions and your uniform will be provided. For a small number of activities, like camps we may ask for a contribution towards the cost.

Will it help me join the police force?

The Volunteer Police Cadets will provide you with an insight into policing; however, it will not specifically assist your application.

Can I still join if I have been in trouble with the police?

In most cases the answer to this is yes. However, each case will be considered on its merit. All cadets will be vetted which means we will be looking at our police records so please tell us on the form if you’ve been spoken to or dealt with by the police.
