Police Constable – Student Officer

The square mile is the world’s leading international financial and business centre, a global powerhouse at the heart of the UK’s economy. It is home to one of the richest and most diverse concentrations of arts and festivals in the UK. Some of the world’s most famous historic buildings, bridges and monuments are here.

In turn the challenges of policing the City are unlike those facing any other police force. Each night 10,000 residents call the City their home. By contrast, each day over 400 000 people from an estimated 189 different cultures and nationalities come to work in the City.

The City of London Police is proud to deliver an exceptional service and year on year we have risen to this challenge, the City of London Police have achieved sustained crime reductions over the last decade; this coupled with our impressive detection rate is an unrivalled achievement. We are committed to keeping the city safe, and protecting the city from the threat of terrorism. We have one of the highest arrest rates resulting from stop and searches in the country and the lowest complaints rate.

In order to meet the demands of such a busy City, City of London Police officers must have a desire and a willingness to help others along with a professional attitude. Those with an eye for detail, strong customer focus and calmness under pressure will succeed in this dynamic and varied role.

As a City of London Police officer you will endeavor to provide a reassuring presence and protect the public as well as prevent and investigate crimes committed within the business and residential communities.

It can be a challenging and unpredictable job with no two days ever the same but it's also incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.

A diverse workforce improves the service we provide to our public by making us more approachable and relevant within our communities. This is why it’s vitally important that we recruit people from a wide range of communities and backgrounds with an understanding of cultural issues and a wide range of skills. We therefore particularly encourage female and people from black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities to join us.

As a police officer with the City of London Police, you will:

  • Come face to face with the community every day
  • Attend emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Take statements from members of the public
  • Prepare reports
  • Investigate crimes and offences
  • Conduct searches
  • Make arrests and attend incidents.

There are a variety of specialist departments too – like Support Group, Mounted Branch, Tactical Firearms Group and CID. At this time, there is no direct entry into specialist units; officers in these units have all completed their 2 year training and probation period and gained the required experience in frontline policing before specialising.
