Staff Officer Assistant Commissioner

Description

Applications are invited from substantive Inspectors to work as Staff Officer to the Assistant Commissioner.

The post holder will support the Assistant Commissioner in discharging his national and local responsibilities. Working closely with him on day to day issues, to include writing structured reports, briefing notes and providing detailed updates on any strategic policy issues and actions required by the Assistant Commissioner.

The successful candidate will also support the wider Chief Officer Team and be a key member of the Staff Office team, reporting to the Head of Staff Office.

In addition to preparing presentations and managing the Assistant Commissioner’s correspondence, you will also conduct research, attend a range of key strategic meetings and boards that are under the remit of the Assistant Commissioner, and monitor the progress of priority work areas. You may be required to represent the Assistant Commissioner when required at meetings and provide him with relevant updates. You will be required to support the Assistant Commissioner at a number of ceremonial events during the posting period.

There will be requirement to work shifts that support the Assistant Commissioner and on occasion to work extended hours and travel in order to support him.

Essential criteria

  • Excellent communication skills, including correspondence and report writing skills
  • Excellent negotiating skills - the post holder will be expected to liaise with senior officers across the country and must be comfortable with negotiating upwards.
  • Proven ability to engage with stakeholders
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Ability to work on own initiative and with minimal supervision
  • Good team working skills including office cover when required
  • Good resilience
  • MS office skills
  • Be willing to be vetted to an appropriate level to support the Assistant Commissioner
  • Hold a current A-B police driving permit

Vetting criteria

  • Due to the particular responsibilities held by the Assistant Commissioner the post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material. Applicants must hold, or be prepared to undergo, MV/SC before taking up the post.
  • Additionally this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual-nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security applicants who do not hold or acquire (MV/SC) and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.

Desirable criteria

  • Good understanding of the Force and how it operates across the various Directorates.
  • Good knowledge of MS PowerPoint an advantage
  • Understanding of Force Governance structure
  • Understanding of the City of London Corporation, its structure and how it operates

Owing to the requirements of this post, it is not suitable for a flexible working arrangement.
