City of London Police welcomes new Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners

City of London Police is pleased to start 2022 by welcoming new Commissioner Angela McLaren and Assistant Commissioners Paul Betts and Peter O’Doherty to its chief officer team.

Commissioner McLaren’s appointment was announced in July 2021 by the City of London Corporation. She took up the role on 3 January 2022.

She succeeds Commissioner Ian Dyson QPM, who has retired after a 38-year career in policing and carried out the role of Commissioner from January 2016.

Commissioner McLaren joined the City of London Police from Police Scotland in December 2020 in the newly-created role of Assistant Commissioner responsible for fraud and cyber crime.

Paul Betts is the new Assistant Commissioner for operational policing from 4 January 2022. He succeeds Assistant Commissioner Alistair Sutherland, who was with the City of London Police for five years before joining British Transport Police as Deputy Chief Constable in late 2021. AC Betts joins from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) where he is currently a Commander with responsibility for Professional Standards and Recognition. 

Peter O’Doherty is the new Assistant Commissioner responsible for fraud and cyber crime, also from 4 January 2022. He succeeds Angela McLaren as she moves into her new role as Commissioner. AC O’Doherty returns to the City of London Police after leaving two years ago for the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU), the body responsible for regional crime and counter terrorism functions, where he is currently Assistant Chief Constable.
