Increased police officer numbers to prevent crime and ensure a visible policing presence as World Cup and Christmas celebrations arrive in the City.
The City of London Police is warning anyone intent on committing crime in the run up to Christmas that it is ready and will do everything in its power to stop them and protect the thousands of people expecting to enjoy the festive period in the City.
The force has launched Operation Tinsel to tackle the increased threat of phone or bag theft, the potential for violent or anti-social behaviour and will actively be working with community partners to prevent violence against women and girls.
The operation includes additional visible police as well as plain clothed officers, automatic number plate recognition activity, the use of drug dogs, night-time community engagement events and partnership working with bar, pub and restaurant owners.
Superintendent William Duffy, Head of Local and Response Policing said:
“Our City is the most exciting place to be in London, offering the best bars, pubs and restaurants and with the added celebrations of the World Cup, we’re keeping it safe this Christmas.
“The City is a safe place but we know criminals will be looking to make the most of the coming weeks, targeting people using mobile phones on the street, not watching their bags or coats at Christmas gatherings and with the potential to commit violent crimes.
“Our dedicated teams will be out in force across the square mile, working to a zero tolerance of criminal behaviour and ready to help wherever needed.”
To support operational activity the Force is launching a digital communications campaign, targeting those living in, visiting and working in the City to:
Be extra alert - protect your phones, bags and belongings this Christmas.
Keep your head – don’t let alcohol or celebrating slip into anti-social or violent behaviour.
Know how to get help – immediately if you feel vulnerable or that you feel unsafe.
Throughout December key evening events will include Reframe the Night, where officers and partners from organisations such as the Samaritans and St John Ambulance will be in one hub that people can go to for help, should they feel it’s needed. Details of where and when the hub is in use will be shared from the @CityPolice Twitter feed.
The campaign will also promote how people can share live and immediate concerns using StreetSafe and what women especially can do if they find themselves feeling vulnerable or at risk by knowing how to use AskForAngela.
