“First-class” Commissioner of the City of London Police set to retire

Commissioner of the City of London Police Angela McLaren is to retire from her post on medical grounds.

Angela joined the City of London Police from Police Scotland in 2020 as Assistant Commissioner for Economic Crime and Cyber Crime.

She was appointed as the force’s Commissioner in July 2021 and will retire from policing on 30 June.

The process to select and appoint the next Commissioner of the City of London Police will begin shortly. In the meantime, Pete O’Doherty will continue in post as Temporary Commissioner.

Chair of the City of London Police Authority Board, Tijs Broeke, said:

“Angela is a first-class commissioner who has led the force with distinction.

“She has overseen an unrivalled policing operation, maintaining the City’s position as the safest business district in the world, and effectively tackling economic crime as the National Lead Force for fraud.

“She has driven improvements to community policing, championing initiatives to reduce violence against women and girls, enhancing the diversity and inclusivity of the force, and putting the needs of victims at the heart of everything they do.

“She has at all times embodied the values of professionalism, integrity, and compassion in carrying out her leadership responsibilities. We are hugely grateful for her commitment and determination, and we wish her and her family all the best for the future,

“In the meantime, we are grateful to Pete O’Doherty for continuing in the role of Temporary Commissioner.”

City of London Police Commissioner, Angela McLaren, said:

“I am so proud of the work we have achieved together during my time as Commissioner, including the redevelopment of our values and a Policing Plan that puts victims at the heart of what we do.

“My decision to retire early has not been taken lightly. I will miss the many incredible officers, police staff, volunteers, and partners I have worked with in the City of London and beyond. I am also grateful for both the scrutiny and the support provided by the City of London Police Authority Board.”

City of London Police Temporary Commissioner, Pete O’Doherty, said:

“Commissioner McLaren is highly valued and respected in our force and across policing. We are all saddened by the news of her early retirement but want to celebrate the significant and positive leadership she has provided.

“The senior leadership team will continue with our ambitious plans, as a local force and with our national remit for leading the policing response to fraud and cyber, as we strive to be one of the most effective and inclusive police forces in the UK.”

The Police Authority Board supports the City of London Police in delivering its two main roles: keeping the City streets safe, for the benefit of all communities, and being the National Lead Force for fraud and National Police Chiefs Council lead for economic and cyber-crime. This includes delivering the UK‘s national fraud and cyber-crime reporting centre, Action Fraud.
