101 calls are answered in the City of London Police Force Control Room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Gov.uk guidelines advise members of the public to call 101 for the reporting of non-urgent crimes, these may include reporting a stolen car, a theft that has already taken place or to report criminal activity that is not currently in progress. You can also call 101 to give information to Police or make an enquiry. 999 should be used in an emergency where there is risk to life or a crime is in progress.
What to expect when calling 101: when you call 101 you will hear an automated message which will identify your current location and will give you the option to speak to the force local to the location you are in. If you wish to speak with another force, you will be given the option to do so once connected to an operator.
City of London Police and Metropolitan Police aim to answer 101 calls within 30 seconds.
